Volunteer Position: Research Challenge, Leadership Role

CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual equity research competition among student teams from the 1’100+ world's top university business and finance programs. Students write an equity research report on a publicly traded subject company and present their findings to an expert panel. 

Every year, more than 30 student teams from Swiss universities and universities of applied sciences and the University of Liechtenstein participate in the local competition that takes off in early October. Two winning team(s) progress to the EMEA Sub-regional Final and potentially to the EMEA Semi-regional Final (March/April the following year) and Global Final (end of April).

With Research Challenge, it is our goal to teach the best practices in equity research and corporate analysis. Students are supported by more than 80 volunteers who provide industry expertise and mentorship, grade their research reports and judge their presentations.

Requirements

  • Personal and long-term experience in equity or corporate credit analysis
  • Local network with equity research professionals (buy and sell-side) and knowledge on publicly traded Swiss companies
  • Expected commitment: 6–8 hours/month on average (more on peak months October, December, and February)
  • Expected term: 3–5 years
  • Previous volunteering experience in Research Challenge has a high advantage 
  • CFA Charterholder

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to strategy (i.e. new initiatives and offerings, sponsorship, selection of a subject company, etc) 
  • Ensures effective organization and delivery of the project (i.e. volunteer recruitment and management, organization of educational workshops, etc) 
  • Participate as a judge for the selected local and national competition rounds
  • Maintain key relationships with stakeholders: universities, subject company, sponsors, CFA Institute, etc.

Volunteer Position: Generations Conference (Family Office Conference)

The annual Generations Conference is an independent platform for asset owners, their family office employees, and trusted advisors to learn, discuss challenges, network, exchange ideas and best practices. The one-day event covers a range of relevant topics such as governing the family and family businesses, succession planning, and managing generational wealth.

The agenda committee assembles every year to create the conference program. 

Requirements

  • Ideally CFA charterholder and member of CFA Society Switzerland
  • Extensive work experience in family office industry 
  • Excellent professional network
  • Time required for this role: 2-3 hours per month 
  • Duration of engagement: minimum 1 year (prolongation to the second year possible)

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Attends biweekly team meetings (mainly conference calls, perhaps in-person meetings)
  • During meetings, actively contributes to discussions leading to development of the Generations Conference agenda 
  • Outside meetings, research and identify relevant topics and speakers
  • Actively promotes conference and related events to his/her professional network

Volunteer Position: Membership 2023 Committee 

The Membership Committee aims to create a leading community of Investment Professionals in Switzerland. The committee strives to ensure all Regular and Affiliate members of our community have a platform to:

  1. Connect with fellow members to share ideas, develop contacts and obtain referrals to enhance their careers.
  2. Grow with critical life-long investment knowledge, skills and solutions for themselves, colleagues and clients. 
  3. Lead in their career, profession, industry and society to make a difference.

We foster this by creating a local network where members have priority access to career resources, professional learning opportunities, volunteer opportunities, educational and networking events.

 Whether new to the investment profession, a long-time charterholder, or somewhere in between, our committee is dedicated to helping members advance their investment management careers and drive confidence in the profession.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the Board & CFA Institute’s strategy for member retention, engagement, membership growth and to reduce society membership gaps.
  • Support the strategic goals of the CFA Institute related to membership: https://connexions.cfainstitute.org/our-strategy/strategic-goals  
  • Attends team meetings (mainly conference calls, also in-person meetings)
  • Support different communication exercises with members include targeted marketing, campaigns, reaching out to members directly & gathering qualitative feedback
  • Support and advise the staffed office on measures to improve member engagement and initiatives to promote membership growth.
  • Advise on membership feedback surveys to assess satisfaction with various membership value propositions.
  • Actively promotes CFA Society membership and related events to his/her professional network

  • You will be responsible for preparing and performing the “How to succeed in Finance” series together with another volunteer
  • Think about needs of candidates and address them/discuss new ideas (and implement them)
  • Pro-actively researching and identifying relevant topics (and speakers) interesting for CFA candidates and students
  • Bring high energy and enthusiasm to the committee


Candidates Committee junior member requirements:

  • Enjoy attending networking events

  • Candidate of the CFA Program or student at a Swiss university
  • “Candidate / Student Member” of the CFA Society Switzerland
  • Available for quarterly committee calls and attend the series “How to succeed in Finance and provide feedback
